The Week Ahead: Tech Earnings Reports to Come Fast and Furious

By Rich Steeves, TMCnet Managing Editor

As you sit down to your first (or second!) cup of java this morning, ready to contemplate today’s Techfast recipe, let’s take a few moments to gaze into our crystal ball and see what lies ahead. This week, we’ll be privy to some earnings announcements from important tech firms, and this news should give us some valuable insight into the market.

Television

In the television space, we’ll hear from a couple of companies that seem to be at a crossroads:

  • DIRECTV will reveal its 2013 first quarter results on May 7. The company had a strong fourth quarter to end 2012, beating out its closest satellite TV competitor, DISH. Analysts expect a strong showing this time around, though the company has been extremely inconsistent the past four years.
  • Cablevision is also scheduled for an earnings report this week. Experts anticipate a drop for the cable provider, which, like all of the companies in this space, is dealing with threats from over-the-top services. Cablevision is also embroiled in a nasty lawsuit with Viacom.

Fiber

Also this week, companies in the fiber space will air their financial laundry. Here are a couple to keep an eye on:

  • tw telecom (News - Alert) has been working to grow in the business Ethernet space, so it remains to be seen how much of an impact that push has made on its numbers. It will reveal its numbers on Tuesday, and analysts expect the old warhorse to remain as steady as ever.
  • Cogent Communications will also reveal its numbers on Tuesday. The company hit a bit of a speed bump a year ago, but has been climbing back to profitability over the past few months, and analysts expect a better report.

Those are just a few of the companies to keep an eye on this week. Check back for more previews and analysis as the week progresses!
