From Random Encounters to Possible Careers: Developers Aim to Improve the Job Hunt

By Peter B. Counter, TMCnet Contributing Writer

The process of looking for a job can feel dehumanizing in today’s world of online applications, invisible competitors and auto-response rejection emails. On the other end, employers have inboxes filled with resumes and cover letters that make the task of selecting candidates for interviews scream “procrastinate” at every opportunity.

A strong social networking presence has been said to lead to jobs here and there, and to that extent, sites like collegefeed have come a long way in making this faceless process much more personal. As it stands, the old fashioned method of pounding the pavement and going door to door just doesn’t yield the same results as it used to. The job hunt is never convenient.

The developers behind JobProx aim to change that, with an app that makes convenience and serendipity key aspects of the quest for needed employment and new employees. The app will work on a proximity feature, notifying users when they are in range of one another, perhaps at the same coffee shop or dog park. Once notification is received, either the employer or employee can request an interview at that time. The recipient of the request has the option to meet right away, schedule a future meeting or decline with a polite but to the point “no thanks.”

But the app isn’t ready yet. The developers are still looking to raise $10,000. To that end, they have hired Command Partners, a digital media agency based in Charlotte, N.C., to promote a new Kickstarter campaign and handle all of the online marketing initiatives.

Crowdsourcing for a project like this is not only a great way to find the capital needed to make the job search more mobile, but it’s also a great way to gauge traction. Recently Kickstarter has been used by robotic developers to prioritize production based on interest.

Although Job Prox is not a cybernetic job scouting robot, it is something that has no predecessor, or as far as Command Partners is concerned, competition. Roy Morejon, owner of the agency, said, “This is the only proximity app out there based on job search and recruitment.”
