I’ve often seen some annoying posts on Facebook (News - Alert) of pictures that say “Click like and share to see what happens!” Inevitably, nothing happens when I do that except for bringing more traffic to the page that posted the image. Now however, pictures on Facebook might actually become interactive, thanks to ThingLink.
With ThingLink, Facebook users can post images with embedded links, annotations, and videos. Not only that, but merchants and companies can also include links to purchase their products, so viewers can make an impulse buy without having to leave their news feed.
Imagine clicking a picture shared by a friend to find not only does the adorable cat picture include a related video, but you can also interact with the image. You can then click links to go to AnimalsLookingCuteOnline.com, or even one to adopt a cat from the nearest shelter.
Of course, it’s first going to be used by companies such as Armani and Microsoft (News
- Alert), which are among its many publisher partners. The customer is charged based on CPM, so it usually ranges around $5 plus the additional expenses Facebook charges to have the messages reach more subscribers. As such, it’s unlikely to see much use from the average Facebook user, but companies that can afford it will surely appreciate the additional advertising opportunities it provides.
An average image can contain linked videos, outbound links, annotations that appear when hovering the mouse over a spot, and more. This adds a new level of interaction to Facebook images, giving companies more connection to their customers. ThingLink will allow for even more immersive advertising without being invasive, as the potential customer is the one to click the image in the first place.
Now we just have to wait and see how it takes to the masses.
