Apple, Samsung Spearhead Tech Firms, Raise $32M for China Earthquake

Apple (News - Alert), Samsung and other tech companies have donated over $32 million (RMB 200 million) in a relief effort for a devastating 7.0-magnitude earthquake that recently struck China’s southwest Sichuan Province. The quake claimed the lives of 200 people, with numerous missing, 11,800 injured and 100,000 left homeless. Many of the affected areas are in short supply of drinking water, food and clothing.           



Apple has pledged to donate $8 million (RMB 50 million).  According to Sina Tech, the Cupertino company released a statement that also pledged new gadgets for quake-hit schools: “At this difficult time, our hearts are with the victims of the Sichuan earthquake. Aside from the cash donation to help the affected people to tide over their difficulties, we are committed to providing new Apple devices to schools in the disaster area, and Apple employees in the locality are on stand-by at any time to help.”

Samsung China pledged $9.7 million (RMB 60 million). Zhang Yuanji, the president of Samsung (News - Alert) China division, expressed the company’s condolences on Samsung’s Chinese web portal, saying “the company would be with the Chinese people through thick and thin to tide over the difficulties.”

Other donators include: Foxconn, pledging $8 million; Asus, pledging nearly half a million dollars; Microsoft (News - Alert) China, donating $161,000; Dell China, donating $2 million; and Amazon China, donating $100 million.

The Chinese Red Cross said it had deployed relief teams with supplies of food, water, medicine and rescue equipment to the disaster areas.
