Google Gives Back with 'One Today' App

By Jamie Epstein, TMCnet Web Editor

With all the horrible events unfolding in Boston as of late, as well as in numerous communities worldwide, it’s high time somebody does something to help our society, rather than fuel the fire.

That’s surely Google’s (News - Alert) reasoning behind a newly launched Android application, called One Today, which allows anyone with a pulse and a kind soul to donate a mere $1. There is not much these days that you can buy with a dollar, so why donate it to someone who really needs it?

The app interestingly highlights causes that are specific to each individual user, based on their likes. Then after setting your money aside for your cause of choice, users can apply the solution to spread the word to others via social media, which could ramp up the amount of funds attained by every organization looking to enhance today’s quality of life.

According to a recent report, currently running for a trial period the offering will be primarily assisting members of “Google for Nonprofits,” a program that works alongside not-for-profit organizations to use Google Apps, a special version of AdWords called Google Grants; ‘donate now’ buttons for YouTube (News - Alert) accounts, and capabilities within both Google Earth and Google Maps – free of charge.

In spite of the fact that you must first receive an invite to use this application, TechCrunch claims it can still be downloaded via Google Play.

The site added, “One Today has a social component to it, letting you set a cap to how much money you’ll match if your friends donate to a cause. By using Google Wallet, you can simply pay off your donation balance once all of your friends have used up your cap. It’s a pretty interesting way of crowdsourcing donations. By allowing you to put the choice of who to donate in your friends’ hands, this problem simply goes away and there’s no excuse not to give. You don’t have to involve others though, as you can participate by yourself or interact with the app’s community.”

As apps are released on the market each and every day, isn’t it about time that they be solely devoted to giving a hand to the less fortunate, rather than just keeping you entertained? I think so, so at least one pat on the back goes out to you, Google.
