Rogers Communications Acquires Blackiron Data for $200M

By Erin Harrison, Executive Editor, Cloud Computing

In a move intended to expand its enterprise-level data center and cloud computing services, Canada-based Rogers Communications (News - Alert) has purchased data center and cloud computing provider Blackiron Data for approximately $200 million.

Blackiron Data, which has approximately 4,000 customers, recently opened a Tier III design and construction certified data center in Markham, Ontario that provides the capacity to readily expand current operations by more than 45 percent, according to company officials.

As a result of the acquisition, Canadian businesses will benefit from a single provider able to ensure end-to-end security and reliability of mission-critical business applications, according to Terry Canning, SVP of Rogers Business Solutions.

“The cloud continues to enable businesses to innovate and evolve in a dynamic market. This acquisition presents Rogers with a significant growth opportunity in the business-to-business market that aligns with our overall enterprise strategy,” Canning said in a statement. “Blackiron brings an experienced and skilled team of professionals to advance data center and cloud business services and we are pleased to welcome Blackiron’s 132 employees to the Rogers team.”

Blackiron Data, which reported revenue of $33.7 in 2012, has eight data center facilities in five major cities across Canada – in Toronto, Ottawa, London, Edmonton and Vancouver – which are located within approximately 125 miles of 80 percent of all Canadian businesses.

Over the past two decades, Blackiron Data has constructed maintained and upgraded state-of-the-art facilities to service thousands of businesses across Canada, according to AJ Byers, president of Blackiron Data.

“We are extremely proud of Blackiron’s employee contribution in building this great company,” Byers said. “As part of Rogers Business Solutions going forward, we are confident that Blackiron will continue to grow and flourish as a customer-focused and best-in-class data center and cloud-based services provider.”
