Straight Talk Not Offering AT&T SIM Cards

By Robbie Pleasant, TMCnet Contributor

It’s time for some straight talk. That is, the Straight Talk iPhone (News - Alert), which lets iPhone users make calls from their iPhones without an AT&T contract, which has proven very appealing to users.

But now that they are no longer offering AT&T compatible SIM cards, its appeal has somewhat lessened.

The Straight Talk AT&T (News - Alert) SIM card was dropped from the website and stores later in January. The current claim is that it’s out of stock, though, as users who currently have one are still able to use them as normal.

According to Straight Talk’s Twitter (News - Alert) account, however, there are no updates as to when they’ll be made available again.

There is hope, though. According to its FAQ page, AT&T-compatible phones without the unlocked language are mentioned, hinting that there may still be more in the future.

Those who use AT&T still have other options available, such as prepaid options, so not all is lost. Straight Talk AT&T SIM cards can also be found on sites such as eBay (News - Alert)… for somewhere around $100.

However, losing the AT&T SIM card may prove problematic for Straight Talk, which sets it behind its competitors. There is still great demand for used iPhone devices, which are sold without contracts, and must be unlocked to work with Straight Talk.

This can be difficult for many users, as the seller must be the one to contact AT&T, so buyers need to beware.

Is this the end of Straight Talk’s AT&T SIM cards? For now it may be the case, but there’s no telling what plans they have for the future. The current rush to purchase those that remain indicate that there is a strong demand, so to ignore that market would be a mistake I doubt Straight Talk would make.

For now, those in need of the cards will continue to struggle to get one, but perhaps that shall change in the future.
