NASDAQ Announces Large Cut to CEO's Bonus Pay

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

NASDAQ announced last week that it had made a significant cut to the amount of bonus money CEO Robert Greitfeld received in 2012. The cut in the Greitfeld’s pay was directly attributed to his handling of the Facebook IPO that launched in the early part of last year. NASDAQ made a filing with the SEC (News - Alert) which showed that the CEO’s bonus had been cut 62 percent compared to the previous year.

While the handling of the IPO was botched, almost from the very beginning, there were numerous people who were responsible for the false inflation and loss of money that occurred after the Initial Public Offering was released. NASDAQ has shouldered the brunt of the blame for what went on last spring and has had to even agree to compensation plans to firms that were affected by the mishandling.

Greitfeld isn’t the only NASDAQ employee who has seen his or her personal income directly affected by the mess. Anna Ewing, the company’s executive vice president, saw her bonus get cut by $263,625 in 2012. The company said in the filing that these bonuses were directly tied to what happened with the Facebook (News - Alert) IPO, just in case anyone might have thought that they weren’t related.

May 18, 2012 was supposed to be a big day for Facebook and NASDAQ as the listing had raised $16 billion. That listing of the IPO was delayed by a technical glitch at NASDAQ. After the initial delay, the company decided to go with a secondary system. This move led to any delays in clients getting their orders and confirmation of sales. This led to big losses by some investors as the stock price began dropping.

Earlier this year, the federal government approved NASDAQ’s plan to pay out as much as $62 million to firms that lost money. That number is well below the amount of money that was estimated to have been lost in the mix up. As much as $500 million is estimated to have been lost.

While Greitfeld certainly saw a cut in his year end bonus, the CEO still took home $1.35 million in bonus money from NASDAQ.
