Bank of America Brings Video Conferencing to ATMs

By Monica Gleberman, Contributing Writer

It’s simple these days to chat with just about anyone, anywhere and at anytime. As part of an ATM upgrade, Bank of America Corporation will begin integrating video displays that will allow customers to connect with tellers when banks are closed.

This new service will provide customers with direct access to bank tellers, who are stationed in call centers located in both Florida and Delaware between the hours of 7 a.m. and 10 p.m., extending banking hours to customers.

“We know that customers want to bank on their schedule -- not ours,” Katy Knox, Bank of America’s retail banking executive, explained in a statement. “This technology gives customers easy, convenient access to ATM banking services with the added option of having a personal interaction and the support of a teller available at the push of a button.”

Furthermore, the new teller-assisted ATMs will allow customers to split deposits into two or more accounts, make loan or credit card payments, receive withdrawals for precise amounts including change, get on screen help, and of course, personally speak to bank tellers face-to-face from the ATM.

“Many Bank of America customers appreciate the self-service option of the ATM, but may require more personal help or have a question for a teller,” added Shelley Waite, ATM channel executive at Bank of America. “The ATM with Teller Assist is the best of both worlds and is the latest way Bank of America is meeting customers’ needs in a way that works best for them.”

The first ATM with Teller Assist is set to debut in a Bank of America located in Boston by the end of this month. Moving forward, the banking institution would like to have at least a dozen video-integrated ATMs globally by the end of 2013 in various markets.

Bank of America has yet to announce which locations it plans on deploying the additional Teller Assist ATMs or what additional features will be offered.
