Google Play Refreshes its Look

By David Delony, Contributing Writer

Google (News - Alert) Play, the online store where most Android users download apps, music, movies and other content, has just rolled out a new design.

“Whether you’re in the mood to listen to Justin Timberlake’s new album, read Harlan Coben’s latest bestseller or discover a new game to play, you want the experience of finding and making your purchase to be quick and easy. Today we’ve started rolling out a redesigned Google Play store on Android (News - Alert) phones and tablets that is simple, clean and — most importantly — helps you find great entertainment, fast,” Michael Silliski, Google Play product manager, wrote in a post to Android’s official blog.

The new design features images that leap off the page and grab the user’s attention. Similar content is grouped together in an attempt to make it easier to find. As users scroll down the page, the recommendations keep appearing, so they always have something new to try – and something to buy of course.

The redesign isn’t simply for looks, though. If users can find content more easily and buy it just as conveniently, Google hopes they will.

The new version supports Android version 2.2 (“Froyo”) and higher, and will be rolled out to Android users on smartphones and tablets worldwide over the next several weeks.

Another new feature for people who like to watch movies on their Android devices is the ability to display “info cards” on the actors while movies are playing. This feature displays information on the actor’s life and career. It’s similar to the “X-Ray” feature offered on select movies on Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD tablets.

Google’s version goes further, with the ability to identify which songs are playing. This feature, available on a growing number of movies, is currently available only on devices running Android 4.0 or higher.
