The Leaders Club: A Big Push for European Startups

By Nicole Spector, Contributing Writer

There's no shortage of tech startups over here in the states, but Europe doesn't have quite as luxurious an offering. That's about to change, though. Last week the European Commission formed an advisory group called the Leaders Club, which will oversee the creation of web startups across the continent.

The new organization is part of Startup Europe, the European Commission’s broader plan of action to strengthen and promote Web entrepreneurship.

Neelie Kroes, Europe's vice president for the Digital Agenda, heads the Leaders Club, and is making it very clear that the goal of the organization is to enhance Europe as a global competitor in the Web startup field.

Kroes says the group will see that “the best ideas start in Europe and stay in Europe.”

Collaborating with Kroes in the Leaders Club are nine Web technology and entertainment masterminds. Among them is the chairman of Rovio Entertainment – the company that came up with Angry Birds; Spotify (News - Alert) cofounders Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon; and Niklas Zennström who helped develop Skype and Kazaa before founding Atomico, a London-headquartered venture capital firm.

The remaining members are Zaryn Denzel of Tuenti; Joanna Shields of Tech City, U.K.; Reshma Sohoni of Seedcamp; Boris Velhuijzen from The Next Web; and Lars Hinrichs of HackFwd.

Led by Koes, the members of the Leaders Club have agreed to regular meetings where they'll brainstorm ways to inspire future Web entrepreneurs across Europe. The nine minds will share strategic viewpoints, past experience and best practices on what needs to be done to get Europe on the map and in the lead of technological innovation.
