There has never really been any doubt that Apple’s iPhone (News - Alert) is a popular device. A new report indicates just how popular it is, especially for doing things that have nothing to do with using it as a telephone.
A report from Web video provider, Ooyala, says the iPhone took up as much as 67 percent of the market share of total time users spent watching videos on their phones. That of course means people were using the iPhone to watch videos more than twice as much as those who use Google (News
- Alert) Android devices.
In comparison, Apple reportedly holds a modest 19-percent share of all worldwide smartphone shipments in 2012. That’s compared to the whopping 68 percent of the market Android held when it came to outright sales of the handsets.
Apple (News
- Alert) hopes it can strengthen both numbers with the rumored release of new iPhone handsets, which could include a selection of different colors. While new iPhones might help its sales numbers overall, it is hard to imagine that the device could grab much more of the market when it comes to accessing video over the Internet.
While Ooyala can only speak to the numbers that pertain to that company’s users (roughly 200 million unique viewers across the globe), other studies in this area have yielded similar, if not better results.
Another study indicated that a full 84 percent of people who are accessing the Internet on airplanes are iPhone users. That is actually just a small sampling of other studies that show that while their competitor is currently outselling the iPhone in quantity, Apple customers are finding more long-term users.
If the trend continues, it seems hard to imagine that Apple wouldn’t eventually begin cutting into the sales numbers of Android (News - Alert) on a global scale.
