BBC has released its latest sports app for Android users, to go along with the recently released iOS version for Apple (News - Alert) users.

The BBC Sport app will provide users with top stories and breaking news from a wide range of sports. With football -- not to be confused with American football --  being the most popular sport in the UK, the app provides live text commentaries on all the big football fixtures, a brand new football section that includes fixtures, results and live scores for each match and league.

The app will also provide a page for every UK football match and the latest football transfer news and rumors along with live video streaming and video clips accessed through media asset pages. The individual football team pages will also include results and future matches with more features to be added in the near future.

“Following our experiences of developing the native iOS and Android (News - Alert) apps for the London 2012 Olympic Games we have continued to follow the hybrid native app approach for our sport apps. By doing this we are able to surface the same content within our apps using WebViews. This allows the native apps to contain every feature found on the website and ensures that everything we do for big sporting events, such as the World Cup, are always available in the app in future,” said Keith Mitchell, technical lead for BBC Sport’s mobile services said in a blog post.

Although the company released an iOS version just last month, this latest Android version does come with some new features. The Android version will include support for seven-inch tablets including the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire among others. This newest version will support audio and video playback along with live streams for Android 2.2 based users.

Users can also keep an eye out for customizable links for the main navigation page, team customization and home screen widgets in the future.
