Tumblr More Popular Than Facebook among Teens and Young Adults

By Carlos Olivera, TMCnet Content Producer

In a surprise upset of sorts, Tumblr seems to be more popular than Facebook (News - Alert) amongst teens and young adults. Y Combinator partner Garry Tan, with the help of Survata, decided to survey over 1,000 teens and young adults on their social media usage after coming across a recent post from Branch co-founder, Josh Miller.

Tan came across Miller’s post about his recent interview with his 15 year-old sister who claimed her and her friends used Tumblr more than they use Facebook. This sparked Tan’s interest, who with the help of YC-Backed Survata surveyed 1,038 teens in the 13-18 and 19-25 age demographics.

Tan’s results were surprising as 59 percent of those surveyed claimed that they regularly use Tumblr, as opposed to the 54 percent that regularly use Facebook. Although five percent among 1,000 people surveyed isn’t a significant advantage, it is however surprising given Facebook’s continuing growth.

“I kept turning it over in my head, and I had to get more data. I wanted to understand this phenomenon -- if I didn't have an intuitive sense, then I wanted to at least get more data,” Tan wrote on his blog.

Late last year, Facebook finally surpassed the one billion user mark, and with its purchase of Instagram, which gets 43 million monthly users, it’s shocking that Tumblr, with a reported total of 77 million blogs, seems to have surpassed the giant in popularity.

Facebook’s popularity was on full display late last August when Facebook user’s crashed iGrill’s website. Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg (News - Alert) posted a Facebook status that read, ”I updated my grilling app, iGrill, today and it now has Facebook integration that lets you see what other people are grilling right now around the world. Awesome. I’m making a Fred’s steak.”

Within a couple of minutes, iGrill’s website was bombarded with tons of visitors causing the site to crash for two hours. Because of that post, and Facebook’s popularity, iGrill was forced to update its bandwidth and add-on servers much sooner than expected.
