While more businesses today are investing in backups for critical documents and server data, they may not be adequately protecting the records and data stored in its cloud applications.
To address this challenge, Cambridge, Mass.-based Backupify helps businesses protect the data that is being collected in cloud applications such as Salesforce.com or Google (News - Alert) Apps. The cloud backup and recovery provider recently launched some new features aimed to give customers greater flexibility in terms of how their Google Apps backups are configured.
The new tools were developed based on the needs of Backupify’s (News - Alert) larger enterprise customers, which have more complicated configuration capabilities, according to Rob May, CEO of Backupify.
“We developed these tools because of the traction we are seeing with larger enterprise customers. These companies have more complexity to their organization, security policies to adhere to, and a large number of accounts to manage,” May told TMCnet.
The new features include the option to disable access to backups for non-admin users and to disable backups for a particular service type.
“We think one of the cool things about Backupify is that it is so simple for a user to go in, find their data, and restore it themselves. We have some customers, however, who need to back up their data but don’t want their users to be able to directly access the backup. So we made non-admin access configurable,” Emily Glass, Backupify’s vice president of product management and design, told customers in a recent blog post.
While many Google Apps users benefit from the range of services available (Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Contacts and Sites), some users don’t need all of them. With this in mind, Backupify now offers the ability to disable backups for Google Sites or any other service in their Backupify account.
“This gets any information related to the disabled service (which you’re not using anyway) out of your way when you sign into Backupify, and also keeps the ‘unwanted’ service from impacting your overall storage,” Glass added.
Backupify for Google Apps is available for larger organizations through two plans. The Enterprise Edition is $4 per month per user, which requires a minimum of 25 seats and includes unlimited storage. The Enterprise Plus Edition backs up an unlimited amount of users with up to one terabyte of data for $990 per month, with the option to buy additional storage as needed.
“We are continuing to add to our Enterprise features, we recently added additional configuration capabilities around selecting which services to back up and whether to allow the end users access to their backups. We will also release configurable data retention shortly,” May added.
Since choosing to trust a backup provider comes with a hoard of trust issues, it would be wise to settle for a company that has a good reputation and has a good number of customers behind its name.
Backupify is one such company, having added its one-millionth account last fall – something that greatly solidifies its position in the field. As more data, services and organizations migrate from local hard drives to the cloud, more than 5,000 businesses and 200,000 users trust Backupify to backup their data.
For over two and half years, Backupify has been focusing on growing its SMB and enterprise offerings and knowing when to let go of certain customer business. Though this has led to account growth stagnation since businesses add an account per user, unlike consumers who can open up multiple accounts, they are heavy-duty users, hence generating more business for the company.
