The size of the federal government is such that any action that makes changes to the entire system requires a large investment of time and resources. After being announced a little more than a year and a half ago, FedRAMP (Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program) is just breaking ground.
The mandatory program, is intended to ensure cloud services for the federal government meet cybersecurity parameters. The General Services Administration (GSA (News - Alert)) gave its first authorization to Autonomic Resources’ ARC-P, a community cloud Infrastructure-as-a-Service based in North Carolina.
Before the company was authorized, it had to go through a thorough review process from a cybersecurity consultancy firm, the Veris Group. Once these controls are tested and verified for cloud services, it will give government agencies the authority to use ARC-P.
Autonomic Resources is a government contractor that hires only employees with government clearance to manage its cloud operations. It offers a cloud and managed services to government agencies providing services to the Department of Homeland Security, Environmental Protection Agency, National Institute of Health, the Navy and other state and local governments.
It has also received the government-wide cloud email contract vehicle.
An authorization process is key to ensuring only companies qualified to offer the services are approved by FedRAMP. While this process was initially time-consuming, once the system is in place organizations will see faster approval or denial times. Currently there are 80 companies that have applied for authorization since application started being accepted this summer.
The GSA stated they will make more authorizations in early 2013.
The goals of FedRAMP are to accelerate secure cloud adoption by assessing and authorizing the right companies and increase the security of cloud solution providers. Implementing a consistent security authorization with a set of standards will ensure only qualified cloud product will be approved.
This will improve transparency between government cloud service providers and increase security and reliability.
Autonomic Resources serves the federal government with the implementation of strategic technologies, advanced network infrastructure, cloud computing, data center automation, information assurance and compliance, open source adoption and software development services.
