Garmin Appoints Pemble as its Newest CEO

By Kasey Schefflin-Emrich, TMCnet Contributing Writer

Clifton Pemble, the current COO of Garmin (News - Alert) Ltd, has recently been named the company's chief executive.

Pemble will take over for Min Kao, the navigation device maker's co-founder, beginning Jan. 1.

Pemble has been employed by Garmin since 1989, serving as the company's COO for the past five years and a member of the board of directors for the past eight years.

"Cliff has been instrumental in establishing Garmin as a global leader in every market we serve," Kao said in a statement. "I firmly believe that he is equipped to lead us into the future with skills and knowledge that encompass the breadth and depth of the entire business. I am grateful to Cliff for his years of unselfish service and his willingness to accept this new role."

Kao will still have an active role in the company, serving as the executive chairman and offering support in its strategic planning and business development.

"We cannot adequately express our gratitude for Min's enduring vision and leadership," Pemble said in a statement. "As we enter a new era for our company, he will continue to play a vital role in the formulation of our business strategy. We are fortunate to have Min's ongoing wisdom and experience as we move forward into the future."

Garmin is currently struggling to achieve high demand for its handheld mapping devices due to smartphones providing its customers with free GPS applications. The company hopes to drive sales through its outdoor and fitness products.
