Amazon Having Great Holiday Season

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

It has long been said that one of the best ways to find out just where America’s economy ranks, is to look at how much money is being spent during the holiday season. After a great start with record breaking Black Friday (News - Alert) marks, shopping has slowed down. One recent study showed that a rather large swath of the American public said that they will be spending less on presents this year than they did a year ago. While that seems like bad news to most retailers, it appears that Amazon is one of the few that has avoided losing customers.

The study, released by Quicksurveys.com, stated that 27 percent of their respondents said they were going to be spending less than last year. The same survey says that 32 percent of people who participated in the poll will spend more money with Amazon this year compared to last year. Amazon has certainly taken quite a few steps during the holiday season to keep their virtual cash registers ringing. Right before the holiday season really got started, the company announced a monthly pricing plan for their Prime accounts

The part of the Prime accounts that is the most attractive is that people who are account holders can basically get free shipping, in a short period of time, for whatever they buy. Another move, installing Amazon Lockers in Staples (News - Alert) Office Supply stores across the country might have helped as well. Knowing that you can have something shipped to a secure location has to be lending peace of mind to online shoppers.

Amazon wasn’t the only company received some good news from the study. Twenty-nine percent of respondents said that they will or did buy themselves or someone else a tablet this season. While that means that Amazon was successful in getting their Kindle Fire on the “must have” list, they still aren’t selling quite as much as Apple (News - Alert). 13 percent of people said they would buy an iPad Mini, while 12 percent chose the Kindle Fire.
