Media Excel Nabs Huge Contracts from South Korea's Largest Telecommunications Companies

By Tabitha Naylor, Contributing Writer

A recently founded American company Media Excel has won three multiscreen transcoding contracts from SK Telecom, Korea Telecom (News - Alert) and LGU+. These three companies sit atop the South Korean telecommunications industry, and Media Excel’s obtainment of all three contracts is a huge coup for the Austin, Texas based company.

Multiscreen transcoding is a recent telecommunications development which distributes content on multiple platforms. This content should be available for viewing on devices of varying size and technological specifications including televisions, tablets, and smartphones.

The HERO software package can be setup as a live encoder/transcoder, or it may be utilized offline. HERO features high video quality across the range of devices. Reliability is another key feature of this system; HERO possesses fail-over redundancy and high availability.

The HERO system may work off of a cloud and is a key selling point for the system. A cloud based transcoding systems permits easy scalability and reduced operating costs as the costs are contingent upon the number of customers. The three Korean companies intend to use traditional and cloud-based delivery systems.

Media Excel (News - Alert) was independently chosen by all three companies after a suite of field tests proved the HERO platform would provide the most reliable, widely available transcoding management solution. Media Excel’s HERO platform should deliver more than 120 Korean high definition channels over wired and wireless networks.  The expected audience of the broadcast offerings from these three Korean companies should exceed 20 million paid subscribers.

Media Excel was founded in 2000 and has since become an innovator in the bitrate multi-device transcoding industry. Its software and hardware solutions power over 18 million mobile device views per day in the United States. Media Excel’s multiscreen solutions are used in broadcast markets, governments, telecommunications, multi-system cable operators and content delivery networks.
