Although most people can’t imagine their lives without Facebook (News - Alert), the social media giant is only eight years old. In a remarkable feat, they officially surpassed the one billion user mark last month. They now host over 125 billion friendships.

Between April and June, 54 million new users joined Facebook. At the beginning of July, there were 955 million Facebook users. In just three months, the social network added another 45 million users. The growth is astounding, especially when one considers that Facebook took three years, from 2004 to 2007, to reach 50 million users, a number that it is now garnering each quarter.

With the world population now totaling 6,973,738,433, one out of every seven people on the planet are now on Facebook. Presumably, those who are not on Facebook are too young to use a computer, too old to be interested, or live in places where the Internet is not common. It is also worthwhile to note that Facebook is banned in China, one of the world’s most populous countries. Chinese access to Facebook would, undoubtedly, result in tremendous growth and even more impressive numbers than they already have.

Facebook has 488 million monthly mobile users, 526 daily active users, and 42 million pages with 10 or more likes. Each day, there are 3.2 billion likes and comments posted and 300 million photos uploaded. Although Facebook is a relevant part of most people’s lives and the general public is aware of the reach that Facebook has, the numbers, themselves, are still startling, proving just how vital a part Facebook plays in society.

Despite criticism of the company’s downfalls since it went public in the spring, these numbers prove that the company is still making huge strides and is still enjoying phenomenal success. Whether or not investors will be as impressed by these numbers as the general public is still yet to be seen. Even if Facebook isn’t dominating Wall Street, it is certainly dominating the rest of the world and the public consciousness.
