AT&T Requiring Data Share Plan in Order to Have Facetime Video Calling Usage

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

There has been a lot of talk about AT&T and the “creative” ways they have found to annoy those customers who are iPhone (News - Alert) users. The company is already behind Sprint when it comes to offering up data minutes. Sprint offers unlimited data usage while AT&T has a cap. The company has also had a bit of a commotion over their various policies when it comes to using the iPhone’s Facetime application. The newest turn in this particular saga is that AT&T (News - Alert) is now saying that in order to use Facetime’s video calling features you must sign up for their upcoming shared data-plan.

AT&T can’t actually limit the use of the Facetime application when users are connected through Wi-Fi but they can say whether or not people can use the application when it comes to using the video calling features when you are on AT&T’s 3G network. This is apparently an improvement over what most thought the company would do with these feature as there were several rumors flying around that AT&T might find a way to block the video calling feature of Facetime altogether.

“AT&T will offer FaceTime (News - Alert) over cellular as an added benefit of our new Mobile Share data plans,” spokesman, Mark Siegel said in a statement.

The new wireless data plans are going to be launching later this week and this particular plan will be one way in which the company gains a little popularity among those who have long complained that they simply don’t have enough data to do all that they want with their iPhones.

This new plan allows people to share data among multiple people and devices. This means that if one member of your family or group of friends doesn’t use data all that much and they are with AT&T, they can shunt their data usage over to someone else, or simply use less of a large pot.
