Social media in the Middle East, India and other developing parts of the world have made plenty of headlines, but there are still many gaps between the standard of social communication that Americans enjoy and the standard of social communication in other parts of the world. 

This week, Myriad announced it will be teaming up with several mobile providers to enhance the social media experience overseas.

Myriad’s new customer base will draw for the 70 million users of Malaysia’s Celcom, Indonesia’s Indosat, and Saudi Arabia’s Mobily. They will be collaborating with Facebook (News - Alert) to provide Myriad Updates. 

With the price of data plans being a huge concern to international mobile users, Myriad will fulfill a crucial need: Facebook updates that are available without purchasing a data plan, upgrading their phone or downloading apps.

This will make Facebook accessible to users, whether or not they have the ever-popular Blackberry that has become the phone of choice overseas thanks to BBM or an expensive data plan, which can quickly add up when being charged per SMS and per MB.

Myriad has already provided these services successfully overseas through partnerships with Orange in Africa, Vodafone (News - Alert) in India, and Telefonica in Latin America. 

“Combined with recent operator wins across Asia and the Middle East, as well as our innovative teamwork with Facebook, [all] mark yet another key milestone for Myriad as we continue to aggressively grow our global footprint and reinforce our market dominance as a mobile social powerhouse," said Simon Wilkinson, CEO at Myriad Group.

Although Myriad Updates may not seem like big news in America, for mobile users overseas subject to disproportionate mobile charges, this will be a welcome change. Users in Malaysia, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia can look forward to more accessible and affordable social networking in the near future, bringing them closer to the standards of mobile social networking that most Americans take for granted.
