Blair Levin to Keynote Super Wi-Fi Summit, Lead Discussion on Air.U

Largest White Spaces Implementation in the Spotlight October 3-5 in Austin

NORWALK, Conn. – August 29, 2012 -- Telecommunications policy strategist Blair Levin has joined the speaking line-up at the Super Wi-Fi Summit, leading a keynote session on Air.U, the world’s largest White Spaces implementation to date, TMC and Crossfire Media announced. Super Wi-Fi Summit – held October 3-5 at the Austin Convention Center in Austin, Texas -- is collocated with ITEXPO, the world’s largest and best-attended communications and technology trade show.

Levin, former director of the FCC’s (News - Alert) National Broadband Plan, founder and Executive Director of Gig.U, and Communications and Society Fellow at the Aspen Institute, will be joined by GigaOM editor Stacey Higginbotham in a keynote that will highlight how White Spaces provides an alternative use of spectrum and the ability to reach people more efficiently.

“Bringing next generation networks to educational communities and delivering a strategic bandwidth advantage to the United States is going to require new approaches,” Levin said. “That's what Gig.U and Air.U--two complimentary approaches--are bringing to the table.”

The Air U. coalition -- a consortium of over 500 higher learning institutions and tech industry partners like Google and Microsoft (News - Alert) – has catalyzed over $200 million for private efforts to build gigabit hubs in nearly a dozen communities across the country. In the Air U. deployment, White Spaces – unused television spectrum repurposed for wireless broadband services – will bring underserved small college towns access to high-speed broadband.

“The Air U. implementation is accelerating the White Spaces movement from proof of concept to market opportunity,” said Carl Ford (News - Alert), co-founder of Crossfire Media and VP of content for Super Wi-Fi Summit. “We’re thrilled Blair and Stacey will be joining us in Austin and discussing the real White Spaces opportunity as a new wireless broadband solution.”
