USPTO Grants Google Patent for Glove-Based Input

By Ashok Bindra, TMCnet Contributor

Google (News - Alert) continues to add more patents to its portfolio. The latest addition was on Tuesday for glove-based controller. Granted by USPTO, the patent number is 8,248,364 with a title “Seeing with your hand.”

According to engadget, the glove-based controller refers to a pair of detectors that record images of an environment, and then determine gestures based on the calculated movement between them. The engadget description by reporter James Trew shows a hand drawing out the letter J, hinting that it could be used for text input.

Another suggests recognition of pinch-to-zoom style gestures, wrote Trew.

But some more details of the Google Smart Glove were available on the unwiredview.com website. Per this report, the Google Glove is filled with all kinds of electronics. These include cameras on the fingertips, compass, gyroscopes, accelerometers and other motion detectors on the fingers, CPU, a bunch of RAM (News - Alert) and storage in the palm of your hand, and (wireless) communication chips on the back.

In fact, it also includes a small battery band around the wrist.

Unwiredview.com writer Staska wrote, “After cramming all the necessary detectors and processing electronics inside, the fun with the software begins.”

According to Staska’s investigation, with all the electronics, sensors and cameras embedded in the Glove, Smart Glove has the potential to deliver Minority Report like virtual reality (VR).

And by knowing in which direction and how far your hand and fingers moved, Google Glove can interpret any gesture one makes, and sends that information to the computer that powers heads-up display – thus enabling the computer to react to the gesture commands.

The reports indicate that at present the Google Glove is only a patent. The actual product is therefore a couple of years away.
