Samsung Introduces New Creative Tablet

By Brittany Walters-Bearden, TMCnet Contributor

Samsung (News - Alert) has introduced a new stylus-based tablet, in hopes to provide its users with access to making more creative content. The new device is called the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 and the company has stated that it is more interactive than the current tablet gold standard, Apple’s (News - Alert) iPad.

The release of this new tablet could not be timelier, as Microsoft, as well as other Apple competitors, suggest iPads are not suited for creative content. While they’re useful for media (reading books, watching videos) and Web surfing, they’re not often seen as ideal for content creation like writing documents or multimedia presentations.

"We are going to redefine tablets,” stated Tim Baxter, president of Samsung Electronics America. “People like to lean back to surf the Web. We all love doing that, but we think something is missing. What if there was a tablet to release your creativity? What if there was a tablet that made writing personal? That tablet is here.”

The most notable difference from the Samsung Galaxy tablet is the addition of a stylus device called an S-pen, which, according to the company, will provide more nuanced control of applications. The S-Pen is ideal for use with a new application on the Galaxy Note 10.1 called S-Note. S-Note gives users a surface to draw and write on, with several features to sharpen and perfect the material users place on the screen.

S-Note is capable of changing handwriting to text, matching shapes, recognizing words and even recognizing mathematical formulas.

The Galaxy Note 10.1 will also feature a customized copy of Adobe (News - Alert) Photoshop Touch and universal television remote software. It will include a screen twice the size of the original Galaxy Note, and carries a suggested retail price of US$499 (for the 16GB model).

The tablet is available beginning on Thursday, August 16, across the U.S.
