Study: Nearly Two Thirds of U.K. Wi-Fi Users Experience Service Issues

By Rory Lidstone, TMCnet Contributing Writer

Every home Internet user has at some point had cause to complain about their service. It's unavoidable that something will go wrong at some point, whether it’s something as banal as scheduled maintenance or as drastic as a hurricane. Sometimes these issues have nothing to do with the service provider and can instead be traced back to your own wireless router or adapter.

Recent research from Broadbandchoice.co.uk concurs with what every Wi-Fi user suspects deep down in their bones: 62 percent of Wi-Fi users experience problems with their signal. The study took place this year in the form of an online survey to which 2,300 responded.

While these statistics are U.K. specific, they may feel universal.

Slow speeds was cited as the number-one complaint by 63 percent of respondents, while 32 percent complained of connection drops. The most concerning statistic, however, is the fact that 75 percent of respondents received no help from their Internet service provider when calling to complain of issues.

“Wi-fi problems are very frustrating for customers, especially as the majority of home broadband connections are wireless," said Dominic Baliszewski, telecoms expert at Broadbandchoices.co.uk. "To have data come from half way around the world at speed only to come to a juddering halt when it reaches your router is infuriating. It’s disappointing to see that service providers are not making more of an effort to resolve this issue for their customers."

Thankfully, Broadbandchoices.co.uk also published some free tips along with its survey results to boost your Wi-Fi signal:

First, do a speed test. There are free speed testing services available online which will make it easy to gauge actual performance compared to ISPs' quoted speed figures. Comparing results while connected wirelessly and via Ethernet will make it clear whether or not your wireless router is to blame for poor performance.

Second, reposition your router to avoid barriers between your computer and your router.

Third, channel the channel your router is broadcasting on as other Wi-Fi connections may be interfering with your signal.

Lastly, pay attention to how many users in the household are on at one time. Your problem may be as simple as congestion.

Broadbandchoices.co.uk is a broadband comparison site which has been advising the U.K. about the Internet since 2005. Since its launch, the site has warned U.K. residents that they are on the wrong broadband plan and that advertised speeds don't translate into real-world speeds.
