Sony Creative Software Unveils Pixelcast Media Sharing Service

By Tanya Palta, TMCnet Contributing Writer

Sony Creative Software recently unveiled Pixelcast, a new online media sharing service that supports collaboration between friends and family with videos, photos and music to create an all encompassing multimedia experience.

Not to be confused with other media sharing services (like Flickr), Pixelcast is has its own unique functionality and is seen as an extension of the Sony Creative Software family.

In the past, Sony Creative Software has won applauds for its diverse range of digital video, audio and music products, including, Sound Forge Pro, ACID Pro and Vegas Pro software.

Hence, no surprises that Sony Creative Software has a divergent client base including professionals in the film, television, video game and recording industries, as well as students, educators and hobbyists.

"It's not unusual for photos from a family event to become scattered across multiple social sites, computers, or even e-mails,” said Dave Chaimson, vice president of global marketing for Sony Creative Software. "Pixelcast offers a new solution by enabling users to interact and collaborate with one another to create jointly produced albums, or experiences. Collaboration is only part of the fun.”

Pixelcast by Sony Creative Software lets one upload videos, photos and music via most Web browsers and let them play around and experiment by offering built-in effects and tools. The service is serious about privacy and one can control viewer access and user roles and even can post links to your Pixelcast experience on Facebook (News - Alert).

The Pixelcast service also lets individuals view their multimedia files in a number of formats, from a map to a setup organized by date and time.

Pixelcast, a U.S. only service, is currently available at www.pixelcast.com and has the following price pyramid:

  • Free Account - limited Pixelcast functionality with 500 MB storage space
  • Plus Account - $49.95; full Pixelcast functionality with 5 GB of storage space
  • Premium Account - $69.95; full Pixelcast functionality with 10 GB of storage space

“Pixelcast also ensures that photos and videos uploaded to an experience can only be accessed by someone who is invited to view, edit or contribute to it,” added Chaimson. “We're thrilled to introduce Pixelcast as a new service for our users to create unique experiences to share and collaborate with friends and family. Check out the introductory video at Pixelcast.com for information on uploading and sharing to the Pixelcast cloud and, while you're there, give the service a try by signing up for a free account."
