The ThinkPad X1 Carbon Officially Unveiled by Lenovo

By Tanya Palta, TMCnet Contributing Writer

Lenovo (News - Alert) has been dominating the news for the past few weeks. First, they were in the news for showing their unequivocal support to Microsoft's Windows 8, even though if they were of the opinion that the operating system may find favor among home users than enterprise users, since any companies are still transitioning from Windows XP to Windows 7.

The electronic giants are now back in headlines with the price leak of the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon. The ThinkPad X1 Carbon will go on sale later this month at around US$1,299.

Since its announcement, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon has captured the imagination of the industry pundits and consumers alike. Striking a balance between form and function, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon also marks the 20th anniversary of Lenovo ThinkPad product line.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon has the distinction of being one of ThinkPad brand's first Ultrabooks, and with it Lenovo hopes to rescue its struggling Ultrabook line up.

The latest ThinkPad has third-generation wireless connectivity and has a design and interface sensibility inspired from tablets and smartphones. The 14-inch (35.5 centimeter) laptop weighs a mere three pounds and has a battery life of eight hours. It will draw its juice from Intel (News - Alert) 3rd Generation Ivy Bridge processor and it also comes equipped with Intel HD Graphics 4000 integrated graphics chip.

The highlight is no doubt the carbon fiber for the laptops chassis, and the spill-resistant keyboard that offers LED backlighting.

The ThinkPad X1 Carbon series also features Rapidcharge technology, which charges the laptop battery to up to 80 percent in just 35 minutes.

"Overall, the ultrabook is the right direction. It's the start of the journey, so it's not the destination," said Dilip Bhatia, the ThinkPad business unit's general manager, adding that more competitive pricing will help improve ultrabook sales. "In general you will see notebooks get thinner, get lighter, have the instant on connected capability. So I'm not worried about it."
