Green Mountain Digital Becomes NatureShare, Introduces New Social Platform for the Outdoors

By Amanda Ciccatelli, TMCnet Web Editor

Do you love the outdoors? You may not have heard about Vermont-based mobile apps company Green Mountain Digital yet, but it has developed numerous popular nature and outdoor lifestyle apps that are made for you. The company, founded in 2009, has just closed a $1.5 million funding round and is changing its name to NatureShare, a new social platform that enables members to collect their wildlife sightings and outdoor experiences and share them with people all over the world.

"Since our founding, we've been dedicated to providing people who love the outdoors with innovative applications that enhance their appreciation of nature and wildlife," said Brendan Cahill, CEO of NatureShare, in a statement.

The company’s most recent funding round included new and previous angel investors and a follow-on investment from the Vermont Center for Emerging Technologies’ Vermont Seed Capital Fund. Additionally, NatureShare raised about $1.5 million in a previous seed round in 2010.

Since 2012, the company has doubled its number of registered users and tripled its installed base of downloaded apps to over 750,000. In response to the increase in interest in the vertical, NatureShare is developing a new social platform to meet the demands of the outdoors audience. With the new round of funding, NatureShare will launch its social platform this fall, as well as continue to improve and add to its existing catalog of apps.

"Now, as NatureShare, we'll be connecting people to the outdoors as never before, through a Web and mobile community that will enable members to explore and share their experiences wherever they are,” said Cahill.

The company also welcomes David McGowan, the CEO of Invitel, a digital triple-play service provider, to its board of directors. McGowan is an experienced media and telecommunications executive in the United States and Europe, as well as the chairman of the Woodstock Digital Media Festival.

He said, “NatureShare is a forward-thinking company, poised to change the way people interact with nature and the outdoors through technology, and I'm pleased to be on board with the company at this exciting time.”

NatureShare has also designed and published over 30 award-winning mobile apps including Audubon Birds of North America, Orvis Fly Fishing: The Ultimate Guide, GardenMinder, and Sailing World: Knots and Splices for iOS, Android (News - Alert), Kindle Fire, Nook, as well as other mobile operating systems.
