Amazon just released its Instant Video app for the iPad, which lets you stream movies and pick from 100 thousand movies to rent for personal enjoyment. The app would give other services like Netflix a bit of a nudge, but it seems like it won't do so for millions of Apple (News - Alert) product users who have jailbroken their hardware.

Jailbreaking is a term used to describe the over-riding of Apple's lock on its own proprietary App Store imposed on all of its mobile products. This is done usually by exploiting the hardware and software and gaining a sort of "God mode" access into the operating system that lets them download things that have not been authorized by Apple in the App Store for its own arbitrary reasons. For inexperienced users, there are also “jailbreaking apps” like iPhoneLox. This is a legal process that does not fall under the DMCA, but Apple still has the rights to void the warranty on any systems it finds any sign of jailbreaking.

Some companies feel the need to help Apple enforce its need to make people use the App Store. Amazon, in this case, decided to release an app that doesn't allow people with jailbroken tablets to access it, cutting off access possibly from millions of people who just wanted to download whatever they chose to.

Of course, any attempt to force people to use certain venues in their gadgets will fail, and it definitely did. Users have found a workaround allowing them to use the Instant Video app regardless of any sort of jailbreak, found on Cydia, an unauthorized "pseudo" App Store that distributes many apps that didn't make it through Apple's arbitrary system. The hero coming to the rescue is called "xCon," an application that somehow fools other apps into thinking that your iOS device isn't jailbroken. Perhaps this might work with other apps, but only time will tell what users' experiences will be with future releases of Instant Video and iOS updates.
