Gmail Gives You a Better View With 7-Inch Tablets After Update

By Miguel Leiva-Gomez, TMCnet Contributor

Apparently some people have been bothered with how Google's flagship e-mail service - Gmail - works on 7-inch widescreen displays. The awkward interface finally took a turn once Android (News - Alert) 4.1 "Jellybean" was released. Some bugs that people complained about have also been fixed.

The update, released on Wednesday this week, starts the month fresh with over 100 thousand downloads. With the new interface update, e-mails no longer cut off in landscape mode, offering users the ability to view the interface either vertically or horizontally. On the updated application's page in Google (News - Alert) Play, users have been complaining about the lack of a "pinch to zoom" feature, which has been an essential part of the whole tablet touchscreen experience. Others have reported an inability to view any of their inboxes, an issue which will surely be addressed by the team at Google if it's not a client-side issue.

Coincidentally (or perhaps not), the update came a couple of weeks after Google rolled out with its own tablet - the Nexus 7. The motivation might have been from user complaints as they were trying to view their e-mails on the new tablet, a sign that Google listens to customer complaints.

However, as customers complained about the older version of Gmail, newer complains are arising that might force Google to make yet another update to fix further bugs. One such complaint reads: "Upon receiving new (unread) email, font switches to bold for ALL items in summary list - and stays bold (even if read). Happens when using system font other than default (also- system font changes not consistently applied). Please fix, thanks!"

Others are complaining about the inability to use "pinch to zoom," like one user called Onur, who said, "Needs work. Where is zoom in/out? HTML e-mails are a pain to read without zoom."

Apparently, Google needs to take a little more time to fix these issues, as the war hasn't been won yet. We're hoping for a hasty release that will satisfy everyone.
