WildPackets: Your Data-Based CSI

By Robbie Pleasant, TMCnet Contributor

When something goes wrong in your network or computer system, you want to know what, why and how you can prevent it from happening again. There are several ways to look into the problem, but WildPackets (News - Alert) has an effective solution for stopping problems at the source.

WildPackets is a network and application performance monitoring business, which uses packet analysis for end-to-end troubleshooting, monitoring, and reporting. By capturing and analyzing data packets, its software can locate problems at the source at over ten gigabits per second.

Two of the key products from WildPackets are OmniPeak and TimeLine, both of which have recently had upgraded versions released. OmniPeak, the overall analysis software, can work on essentially any device or platform as a standalone product or as a part of one, and has won several rewards for its analytical capabilities, export analysis, user interface and troubleshooting.

TimeLine is an appliance that captures packets as they go by, recording them for a “forensic analysis” type of approach. Analysis is automated, allowing users to go about their business while the WildPackets software does its work.

While WildPackets’ customers tend to be in the mid-sized businesses and up, approximately 800 of the Fortune 1000 companies us software from it, as well as customers in education, financial, healthcare and government.

Many tend to purchase WildPackets products for its VoIP capabilities, keeping communications clear and consistent.

“For any company that’s doing network analysys & network monitoring…they should strongly consider doing an approach where they start with packet analysis,” said Jay Botelho, director of product management for WildPackets. “They’re going to need that data someday anyway.”
