Matt Graves Steps Down as Director of Communications at Twitter

By Rory Lidstone, TMCnet Contributing Writer

After a little over two years in the position, Twitter's (News - Alert) Director of Communications, Matt Graves, announced Wednesday that he will be stepping down from the role to take some time off. Prior to working at Twitter, Graves was the VP of Marketing Communications for iMeem and the PR Director of RealNetworks (News - Alert).

Being in charge of communications for any organization is a demanding job, requiring the development of communications strategies while maintaining a consistent brand and message across a number of products and departments.

On top of that, the communications director is often responsible for responding publicly for the company he or she represents, including rumors of strange investments or legal investigations.

As such, it's no wonder Graves feels he needs a break.

Graves' departure from the Twitter team follows a number of shake ups in the Communications department: Gabriel Stricker was just hired on as VP of Communications; Twitter Head of Communications, Sean Garret, stepped down in November; and former Comms Director Lynn Fox left the company also toward the end of 2011.

Despite what some may say is suspicious activity at the company, Graves had nothing but positive things to say about his time at Twitter. In fact, he thanked the company and a number of its executives as part of his collection of goodbye tweets meant to serve as an official public announcement.

Graves did jokingly say that, because his job was so demanding, two years in real time is something more like 10 years in Twitter time, adding that he may now be eligible to receive a gold watch. Otherwise, Graves said he plans to just enjoy the rest of the summer for now.

As for the Communications department at Twitter, there's no word yet on who, if anyone, will be filling the role of Comms Director.
