GitHub Gets Noticed After Funding

By Katie Gatto, TMCnet Contributor

For those of you who are not familiar with the burgeoning social network GitHub, here is a look at how the company describes itself, "GitHub is the best place to share code with friends, co-workers, classmates, and complete strangers. Over a million people use GitHub to build amazing things together. With the collaborative features of GitHub.com, our desktop and mobile apps, and GitHub Enterprise, it has never been easier for individuals and teams to write better code, faster," states the company.

Well it looks like the folks over at GitHub are finally getting some serious attention. Many news sites have been talking about the four- year- old company, posting tutorials and primers, as well as new and reviews in recent days. All of this attention is no doubt good for the company, but it seems to be coming from an unusual place, its newest source of funding.

The company has also been gaining some serious attention in terms of funding. Earlier this month the company put out a release about their newest influx of cash in which the following was said, "Today we are partnering with Andreessen Horowitz and announcing our first ever outside investment. Why now? In four short years we've done a lot we're really proud of. We've shipped great native apps like GitHub for Mac and GitHub for Windows. We've made using GitHub from within Eclipse even easier. We've contributed to killer open source projects like libgit2 and git. We've thrown hundreds of drinkups, sponsored tons of conferences, drawn a bunch of octocats, and, of course, made building software even better with github.com and GitHub Enterprise."

So will the combination of a fresh infusion of cash and the combined attention that it has brought to the company give them what they want to bring them to the next level? Only time will tell, but when it comes down to it most startups are happy to get the much needed attention to their efforts.
