Bookmarking Creator, Spool Bought By Facebook

By Katie Gatto, TMCnet Contributor

For those of you not familiar with Spool, the company makes a bookmarking tool for mobile devices, one that allows the user to save content from the Web and view it online or offline, in a manner similar to the way that a DVR device allows television viewers to record live TV and watch it later. The company has ceased operations, after being bought out by the social networking giant,Facebook (News - Alert) (News - Alert).

In a posting on the Spool blog, the company said the following about the acquisition by Facebook, "We started Spool to make content easy to consume on a mobile device. To accomplish this, we built some very sophisticated technology and developed a deep expertise in mobile software development. We firmly believe that solving these problems will be increasingly important as the world accesses the Internet primarily through mobile devices. We are extremely excited to accelerate our vision and help Facebook’s users connect and share with the people in their lives. We wouldn’t be in a position to have this sort of impact without our supporters and the Spool community. Please accept a heartfelt thank you for supporting us and for affording us this opportunity." Facebook has not put out a release about the acquisition or what it will mean for the site in the future.

For the time being the terms of the deal have not been released, and nothing is known about how much it cost Facebook to purchase Spool. Given that the company recently acquired another mobile device based company, Instagram, one can only hope that the company will take the new mobile development talent and use it to improve the mobile experience for Facebook users, which is seriously lacking, as anyone who has signed on to see their friend feed on a mobile browser only to be bombarded by a list of "People you may know", or found a mobile made post was later missing from the site, can attest to.
