Google Now Deduces Where You Live in Just Three Days of Use

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

Never let it be said that Google (News - Alert) shrinks away from a fight. Or maybe it should be that Google never learns from its mistakes. The Internet giant has been at the heart of more than its fair share of battles when it comes to privacy over the years. It seems likely that another fight is brewing with the realization that the Google Now platform records our whereabouts to such a degree that after using the product for as little as three days it will automatically determine where we live.

This isn’t a situation where we plug in an address as our “home” like on so many GPS tracking suites. This particular “feature” also isn’t something that is being touted as a plus. The fact that Google Now figures out where you live was stumbled upon quite by accident by a Reddit user who said, “I don’t know if this has happened to anyone else, but Google Now knows where I live. After three days on [Jelly Bean], I opened Google Now at work and it gave me time and directions to get back home. I thought it was cool and then I opened up Google Maps on my home computer. Lo and behold there is now a new, completely different looking icon where I live that is labeled home. I didn’t add it nor did I ever even search for directions back home. I’m not afraid of technology or anything, but that one was pretty odd.”

Another user pointed out that it makes sense that the new software would tag (News - Alert) a place where you spend a huge amount of your time as your home. Other users believe that it won’t be long before Now users will see the phone deduce the place where they spend about eight hours a day should be tagged as “work.” Of course none of that is the real problem. While some people will obviously find this feature helpful, it’s apparent that Google is not only tracking where you are with their service, but now taking it upon themselves to mark certain stops. What happens the first time someone gets in trouble when those spots are pointed out on a map? This seems like a lawsuit in the making.
