Socialcam is Example of Olympic Technology to Be Put in Use at London Games

By Ed Silverstein, TMCnet Contributor

When reporters from The Washington Post cover the summer Olympics in London, they will be using a new device – called Socialcam – to provide engaging video to their readers.

Socialcam is an app that captures and uploads video which is later offered to friends via social networks. Socialcam will be featured on iPhones used by the paper’s reporters, who are covering events, according to All Things D. Examples of footage will be spot interviews and live events.

The Washington Post is also offering the opportunity for attendees to take their own video for Socialcam. It could later appear on “London Eyes,” which The Washington Post is presenting for the Olympics. London Eyes is expected to be available in mid-July and offered through the summer.

Socialcam, which is a video-sharing app from Justin.tv, was available on the iPhone and Android (News - Alert) via the App Store and Android Market since 2011, according to TMCnet.

Socialcam features a video feed for friends, a feed for personal videos, the camera, a tab, followers, suggested followers, and settings. Socialcam is now found across Facebook (News - Alert). As of Dec. 7, 2011, Socialcam achieved three million downloads, the company reports.

In a related matter, Digital Rapids (News - Alert), a provider of media solutions, and Nederlandse Publieke Omroep (NPO), the Netherlands Public Broadcasting system, said NPO expanded streaming operations with the purchase of 10 dual-channel Digital Rapids encoding systems. They were added for NPO’s coverage of European football championships, Tour de France cycling and NPO broadcaster Nederlandse Omroep Stichting's (NOS) online and mobile coverage of the 2012 London Olympic Games.

In addition, being called the “socialympics,” the London Games will be the most socially-connected event in the history of social media. For example, Facebook is offering a new page, Explore London 2012, so fans can follow favorite nations, athletes and events. Various details will be provided about athletes, too.
