PayPal to Focus in on Mobile Payments

By Steve Anderson, Contributing TMCnet Writer

Recent reports suggest that PayPal (News - Alert) is juggling its operations to move its focus to mobile payments, a sector of the online payment market that has increased rapidly in recent years. Though it's unclear as of yet when the reorganization will be complete or when the changes will become apparent to the user base, one thing is perfectly clear: PayPal wants in on the mobile business and to a much greater degree than it is currently.

PayPal is looking to power a more "unified" experience, and remarks from President David Marcus (News - Alert) show that the company’s various operations including online, offline, and mobile will all be compressed into one central group, which will be led by former Zong (News - Alert) Executive Hill Furguson. Furguson was formerly PayPal's head of their mobile unit, but last month was promoted to global head of product.

With 110 million customers worldwide, PayPal is already somewhat under the gun to ensure that it holds onto the consumers it already has. To that end, the organization just last week unveiled some changes geared toward making the entire process of PayPal a much simpler one to use. Clearing out many pages that commonly went unused by the user base, as well as making the log-in process much simpler were a few of the key updates. Back in April, PayPal also retooled its small business service, PayPal Payments and now the clear target is the mobile market. Simplicity improves the mobile experience by requiring less screen real estate to show all available options, or as Marcus described it, "Mobile is simpler by definition. Starting product designs from mobile will force the elimination of features introducing unneeded complexity."

While PayPal's online payments presence is indeed robust, the fact that over 90 percent of all transactions still take place in physical storefronts is scarcely lost on them and is a challenge in terms of future growth and development. Mobile payments in general is an industry looking at rapid growth, thanks to moves from newcomers like Square and established operations like those of Visa. PayPal is also eager to improve its presence in the financial services market as well by combining the Americas regional organization with their global financial services group, putting the whole thing under Gary Marino, who was founder and CEO of PayPal acquisition BillMeLater.

With payments rapidly becoming as easy as users scanning a mobile phone or handing over a credit or debit card to someone with a mobile phone and an attached dongle, making PayPal much less complex will prove to be extremely fruitful for the company in multiple ways.
