Nuance Getting Set to Release Revamped Swype Program

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

With the release of Siri, smartphone users have begun to see the true future of mobile devices.

Users want the ability to speak to their phones and have a great many tasks carried out for them. Most users’ number-one complaint is that their keyboards and phones just aren’t smart enough for them; There’s too much work to be done in order to get a simple task carried out.

Nuance has tried to answer Android (News - Alert) users’ desires by releasing software that combines a user’s voice commands, tapping, tracing and handwriting on their smartphones.

The new platform will be made available to Android developers tomorrow.

Google’s Android operating system has quickly become one of the most popular OS’s in the world, but Apple (News - Alert) has managed to beat it out when it comes to increased functionality in Siri.

Swype has already been implemented by a number of different Android users, but this new version will also incorporate different functionality, with Dragon Dictation software.

The best news for companies using other operating systems like RIM’s BlackBerry is that Nuance (News - Alert) will be releasing a packet allowing them to tailor this new kind of Swype program into their OS.

"Some can be as quick as two months. Others can take a year," said Brian Yee, director of mobile input for Nuance.

Nuance is also apparently rumored to be the backbone for Apple’s Siri. If Nuance is indeed Siri’s backbone, it seems to make sense that this new version of Swype (News - Alert) would indeed rival Apple’s crowned jewel.

Of course, Nuance is not exactly forthcoming as to whether or not it truly had a hand in Siri. The company will admit that it licenses some of its software to Apple, but neither Swype nor Apple will tell exactly what they have partnered on.

Most of the Swype technology was originally created to help the disabled, though its function has grown as users have seen more uses.
