Smartphone Use Or Abuse?

By Lyndsay Krisel, TMCnet Contributor

Is smartphone use a necessary aspect of this decade, or has it gone a little too far and taken away from significant “private pleasures” in our relationships? It is true that iPhones have been widely useful to us over the past few years, however, consumers seem to have become so addicted to these gadget savvy phones that they would just about prefer have it by their side than engage in sexual activity, according to a survey released by the Gazelle today.

Based on the gadget-trade-in service, about 15 percent of people say that they would rather give up sex than go one weekend without their iPhone (News - Alert). The development of Apple’s iPhones have changed consumers’ lives so much so that we are completely unaware as to exactly how.  In light of this, 25 percent of the Gazelle’s survey respondents explained that they “almost always” use their iPhone while in a social setting, such as during a meal or at a party.

“iPhone hasn’t just changed how we communicate and access information – its also completely changed live social interaction,” according to the article. What seems to be the most disturbing about these results is the fact that nearly four percent of respondents report having used their iPhones in the midst of sexual activity; now if that isn’t an addiction, than I’m not quite sure what is.  The real question still remains: have iPhone-crazed addicts taken its use a little too far this time, and when does the line get drawn between the importance of technological interaction and real, human interaction?
