Exploring the Enterprise Entering the 'API Economy'

By Juliana Kenny, TMCnet Managing Editor

The world of enterprise communications is trending towards what Roberto Medrano from SOA Software calls, the “API economy.” While he has not necessarily coined this term, as the EVP for SOA Software, he spends enough time with enterprises to know where they’re taking their customer-facing strategies, and how they are developing communications.

“In the 1990’s, people wanted to do websites to provide information, everyone wanted one. That was the initial Internet. Now everyone wants to create an API to provide information such as revenue screens and to improve communication overall,” Medrano said in an interview with TMC (News - Alert) at Cloud Expo East 2012 in New York. “There has been a surge in our business because the guys who are doing APIs now are the large enterprises.”

He mentioned that, years ago, although not too many, businesses such as Facebook and Twitter (News - Alert) introduced the consumer-geared APIs, but enterprise APIs are more complex. “They need security and management,” said Medrano. “Their service level agreements all work differently.” Now business managers want to create cool applications, but enterprises are more complicated.

SOA Software’s Atmosphere solution provides enterprises with the ability to manage their APIs. With new functionalities, as just recently announced, the solution powers the ability to deploy in varying avenues. In Medrano’s opinion, enterprises prefer the private cloud.

Having been in the enterprise space in its naissance, SOA Software was well-prepared to venture into the API market for large businesses.

Enterprises “already have all the assets,” he said. They want to have more control and auditing abilities over their data because they have their own developers. With all of the interactions happening through APIs, it’s imperative for larger organizations to have control over these interactions. SOA Software’s Atmosphere solution does exactly that. “
