Google Makes New Algorithms to Get Around Chinese Censorship

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

While Google (News - Alert) spends an awful lot of its time working on its myriad of products that it has marched out over the last couple of years, there is still quite a bit of attention paid to its old trusty search engine from time to time.

While upgrades are rolled out every once in a while, there is also work to be done when it comes to finding ways to work with foreign governments and their less than wonderful opinions on the freedom of speech. Such is the case with Google’s dealings with China. The company has just come up with a new way to warn the myriad of Chinese citizens who do searches on the site. The new features will come in handy when trying to find ways around blocked content.

China obviously has quite a few censorship controls inserted into all of the search engines that operate inside the country, including Google. Google is obviously not very happy that they are indirectly helping China censor its citizenry and because of this the company has come up with a program that will actually warn people they are looking for censored Information. More than that, Google will actually offer a series of different keyword choices that will get them the same basic info that isn’t censored.

Google made the announcement last Thursday and conspicuously left out why there was a need for these new algorithms. Of course it isn’t really a mystery as to why these new programs have been enacted, after new restrictions on China’s Internet meant that people weren’t able to find movie showtimes, restaurants or retailer reviews. The new restrictions came on the heels of massive amounts of searching being done about recent scandals haunting the upper political class of the Chinese rulers.

Google shuttered its Chinese based search engines in 2010 in order to fight the country’s censorship and now Chinese citizens can only use the regular Google search engine. When people search for terms the government has black balled, the connection to the search engine is lost. Now when people enter terms that are censored, the Google search page will issue a warning that the connection is about to be lost.
