With the introduction of Siri last fall, iPhone users may have forgotten about the Google (News - Alert) Search app. Well, it’s time to place it back on your home screen because Google has released an update for its Google Search app, featuring a complete redesign. Version 2.0.0 has just been released for the iPhone and iPad today, and is available in the Apple (News - Alert) App Store.

In addition to the redesign of the app, the update includes major speed improvements, auto full screen where users can scroll down to hide controls and scroll up to reveal controls, and full screen image search.

Users can also swipe away a webpage to quickly return to search results, search within a webpage using the built-in text finder, and easily switch been images, places, news, and more.

The Google Search app also allows for fast access to other Google features such as Gmail, Calendar, Docs and more all from one location. For iPad and iPhone (News - Alert) users, the update allows you to save images to your camera roll.

Google Goggles allows you to search text, landmarks, books, and images that are right in front of you.

This version of the Google Search app appears to have been written natively, rather than using a simple Web view. This has been at the root of many complaints over Google’s apps on iOS in the past. There’s speculation that Google snuck its Chrome Browser into the update.

An iPhone app helped St. Louis police track down a suspect who they say robbed four men at gunpoint as they were taking pictures near the flood walls along the riverfront. The robber grabbed their money and cell phones, but little did he know the “Find my phone” app, which uses GPS technology to find its location, would end up getting him busted.
