If You Thought Your Facebook Relationship Status was 'Complicated,' Think Again

By Carrie Schmelkin, TMCnet Web Editor

Ah… what a common problem. You get into a new relationship with that guy you have been lusting after for months and things are going just swimmingly. He is still bringing you flowers, looking deeply into your eyes and complimenting you on how stunning you look during each date. But then the real dilemma comes: how do you bring up to him that you would like him to change his Facebook (News - Alert) status from “single” to “in a relationship?” After all, it’s time to make sure your cyber space worlds know you two are an item, right?

Well for one woman, the pressure of her significant other changing his Facebook status simply became too much and, in her case, instead of realizing that social networking relationship updates are not the key to a lasting relationship, she threw in the towel on her relationship and filed for divorce.

According to a Deccan Chronicle report, a 28-year-old IT professional filed for divorce from her husband after he failed to change his relationship status to “married” on Facebook, a few weeks after their nuptials. As explained in recent articles, she reportedly shared that she cannot trust him since he is not willing to publicly declare their commitment to one another on Facebook. The Telugu couple reportedly had an arranged marriage about two months ago.

So what was the husband’s excuse? His defense is that he had simply had a senior moment and forgot to update his status.

"The Hyderabadi husband had told the judge that he was so busy post marriage with family and his furniture business that he really had no time to check his FB or change his status,” Subhash, a High Court advocate, said. "He was willing to do so now or even de-activate his account, however, the woman was not keen to continue with the marriage and she says her husband might be doing things behind her back and she couldn’t trust him.”

The judge has reprimanded that the two undergo counseling.

While this incident might seem shocking, it is not an isolated instance as a 2010 survey by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers showed that 81 percent of "the nation's top divorce attorneys" reported an increase in social networking websites being used as evidence in divorce cases. Perhaps not all that surprising is the fact that Facebook is the leader, being cited in 66 percent of cases that involve online evidence.

From married parties being involved in social networking affairs to individuals opting to spend all their free time on social networking sites as opposed to with their significant other, social networking sites have emerged as the 21st century mistresses.

To be honest, any couple that cannot survive something as inane as a spouse forgetting to update his Facebook status, should probably never have made it down the altar in the first place. Social media should be the last place that we go to for our personal lives, not the first.

Now as a woman, I would be lying if I said I didn’t somewhat understand where the 28-year-old woman was coming from because her husband forgetting to change his status certainly begs the question of ‘Did her husband have a hidden agenda?’ and ‘Why is he not more excited about their marriage?’ But in this case, I am going to go with no; I don’t think he had a hidden agenda and I am sure he was perfectly happy with his union. I think this is a simple case in which one man was not as Facebook crazed as the rest of civilization and, for that, perhaps he deserves praise not crucification.

So for all you couples out there who are navigating your relationships on the rocky Facebook sea, let this couple be a reminder to you – both of how a silly thing like a relationship status can upset your loved one and of how perhaps we all need to take a little breather from a site that has become a great source of contention in relationships.
