Google's Activity Recommendation Service Schemer Lands on iPhone

By Kris Holt, TMCnet Contributing Writer

Finding things to do can be overwhelming. There’s such a wide range of activity options available, but it may not be too easy to discover what’s on where. A new service from Google (News - Alert) called Schemer wants to fix that.

Schemer, which recently launched its iPhone app, aims to help users find cool things happening nearby through Google+. But it acts as a separate social network.

You can share recommended activities (often linked to locations) with your friends, and choose to add something to your list of activities or “schemes” or denote that you’ve already participated in one. The algorithms step in to recommend activities, based on weather conditions, the time of day, your friends’ schemes and categories you visit often within Schemer.

The social network taps into Google+ to discover schemes that the people in your circles have completed. Though it can be accessed on the Web, the launch of the iPhone (News - Alert) app to complement the Android application means it will be easier for people to find schemes while on the go.

Using the “Find Stuff to Do” option, users can discover schemes either nearby or those enjoyable indoors. There are more than 20 activity categories, while Google has teamed up with a number of partners for the service. These include Travel Channel, IGN, Rolling Stone and National Geographic.

The service is Google’s latest attempt to build on its Google+ social layer. The personalization of Schemer through the deep Google+ ties means the company will hopefully drive a high level of engagement among its users.

The search giant launched Google+ in June 2011. The social network is still growing, with app developers saying in March that Google+ may eventually catch up with the dominant Facebook (News - Alert).
