LG Cloud to Rival Apple's iCloud, Accessible to Smart Devices, PCs and TVs

By Kerry Doyle, Contributing Writer

For IT, the mobilization trend warrants more of an enabling force within companies instead of a stop-gap, support service. The trend has also pushed many IT departments to the breaking point in simply managing the proliferation of devices. They also face daunting challenges mobilizing first-tier, business-critical applications, such as email, calendaring, video-conferencing and messaging – not to mention second-tier programs such as field service, data entry or custom corporate applications.

Similarly, for cloud providers the challenge that exists is to provide users with a “one-stop” cloud that covers all of their computing needs.

The LG Cloud service recently announced the beta launch of LG Cloud, which will allow for the consuming of multimedia on three screens – smartphones, PCs and televisions. LG Cloud is designed to work on Android (News - Alert)-based smartphones. The platform also works with LG's Smart TVs and PCs. LG Cloud is ostensibly the company’s challenge to Apple’s iCloud.

Adequate mobilization often requires standardizing applications available to the workforce, developing complex interfaces between back-end applications and applying custom security features.

These capabilities not only require extra IT bandwidth but specialized application development skills as well. However, one of LG Cloud's chief improvements is its "Real-time Streaming Transcoding" technology, which converts files on the server side, rather than on the device. By doing so, the individual devices don't require codecs or converters to play content.

"Most companies today only see the cloud as a storage device or in the case of YouTube (News - Alert) or Flickr, only for one type of content,” said Havis Kwon, LG Home Entertainment president and CEO. “Tomorrow's consumers don't want to go to one cloud for music, another cloud for video, another location for cloud storage and yet another cloud for their office files."

Users who have purchased an LG Smart TV or LG smartphone can receive 50GB of free storage for six months. A new LG Cloud Web site has been set up for users to access the service from PCs. After downloading the application, LG Cloud automatically synchronizes smartphone content with all of the other clients on separate devices.
