US wireless provider Verizon (News - Alert) unveiled today a new feature aimed at those who love to travel. The new service, called simply Global Data Package, allows users to avoid hefty international data roaming fees if added to a domestic data package. It costs an additional $25 per month on top of a currently existing data plan and provides 100 MB of data access before roaming fees kick in.

The service is available in 120 popular travel destinations, including Mexico, Canada, South America, the Caribbean and all of Europe. The Global Data Package, according to Verizon, is meant to eliminate guesswork as a customer using the plan will receive a text message notification when he or she is reaching the end of the provided 100 MB; the customer then has the option to instantly add another 100 MB of data for an additional $25.

This service is meant to supplement Verizon's already extensive lineup of global roaming services — such as its global roaming voice service, which features a Global Value Plan with a fixed monthly rate of $4.99 for discounted global voice use. Additionally, standard per-minute voice rates are available.

Verizon, which posted record revenue growth in the fourth quarter of 2011, has also setup a tools and resources center for customers allowing them to quickly and easily manage their wireless services, whether global or local. The site even includes a trip planner which allows customers to assess their wireless needs before ever leaving the US, while a data calculator provides accurate estimates of data usage. Otherwise, Verizon's 24/7 US-based customer support line is available to help customers plan ahead before travelling internationally.

This announcement comes almost two months after Verizon's announcement that it will offer alternate broadband home access service to users who fall outside of the range of wired Internet providers.
