Are You Somewhere You Shouldn't be? Watch Out, Navizon Could Out You

By Jamie Epstein, TMCnet Web Editor

For naïve teenagers that were dropped off at school a particular morning only to skirt out the back door to enjoy a fun filled day of shopping with their friends, it appears that getting caught by your enraged parents is going to get a whole lot easier due to Navizon’s new offering that can accurately determine where a person is within public places via their phones and other WiFi (News - Alert) devices.

Although right now this solution is targeted at retail stores, shopping malls, museums, and office buildings, the next-generation technology can also be tapped for security and surveillance, as well as a way to analyze traffic patterns in a particular location.

According to a recent article, although Navizon's technology can find where you are, it can’t yet determine if it’s you or someone else simply using your device due to the fact that it only is basing its information off of your WiFi signal.

Teens don’t rejoice just yet though for the fact that you might be able to skate by with the excuse, “I let my friend borrow my phone,” because since the signature of each Wi-Fi signal is different, it is still possible to keep track of these signatures and ultimately determine the activity of the individual, helping to gather the clues needed to determine who is being located.

Not completely a bad thing, this new GPS of sorts can help you to easily find your friend who may have wandered off to another store during your shopping spree or find your boyfriend who was supposed to be waiting for you to buy your new Wedges, but surprisingly disappeared into the sports store.

Navizon is just another way Big Brother is encroaching in our lives. What do you think: is this a good or bad thing? I’m pretty sure I know what that “just caught” adolescent is thinking.
