Two-Thirds of Mobile Shoppers Use iPads

By Jacqueline Lee, Contributing Writer

RichRelevance CEO David Selinger says that Apple (News - Alert) should recast their “Think Different” ad campaign to say, “Shop Different” instead. That’s because a recent RichRelevance study found that iPad users make up two-thirds of mobile shoppers and generate almost 90 percent of mobile shopping revenue.

iPad shoppers spend a whopping $52.66 per item when they shop compared to $21.86 per item for desktop users and $23.80 for other mobile users. While iPad users purchase fewer items per shopping session, buying just 2.98 items versus 4.41 for all mobile devices, they tend to spend significantly more on the items that they purchase.

In all, iPad users spend $158 per shopping session, while desktop users spend $153.

In addition to spending habits, the RichRelevance study also found out more about the way that iPad owners shop. Shopping increases dramatically on the weekend for iPad uses. The iPad also dominates the market between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. By comparison, traffic from other mobile devices remains stable on both weekends and weekdays.

The point of the study, says Selinger, is to learn how to customize the shopping experience according to the customer’s preferred digital channel. “To succeed in this quickly evolving landscape, retailers need to understand how shopping behavior changes as consumers hop between devices and be prepared to tailor the shopping experience in every channel, ensuring continuity and seamlessness regardless of choice of access.”

RichRelevance also released an infographic detailing what people are purchasing online. Primarily, desktop and laptop users purchase gift cards. iPad users, on the other hand, purchase television sets. Another standout piece of information was the conversion rate for iPad users. iPad use converts to a sale three times more often than the use of other devices.

In the U.S., Texas had the highest percentage of mobile shoppers, at 12 percent. People from Montana, on the other hand, were the Americans most content to shop from their desktops or laptops.
