Today, users of the popular Foursquare (News - Alert) app will be celebrating Foursquare Day. If you are a user of this geolocation app then you are no doubt familiar with the benefits and uses that Foursquare has garnered especially for business and users who use the Internet to locate destinations within their vicinity. Started 2 years ago, Foursquare Day was officially declared by the mayor of Las Vegas and the mayor of Tampa, where the concept and development of Foursquare began.
To celebrate this day, the city of Tampa has organized a scavenger hunt that seeks to gather data and analyze services for Foursquare. How can you benefit from this day? Foursquare will send you party packs if you organize a Foursquare Day event. Though being a community-led event, Foursquare provides swag packs that include shirts, buttons and stickers.
Foursquare Day events are different depending on the community planning the event. Foursquare will even use its blog to highlight some of these events and this creates a great opportunity for people to connect. Foursquare staff will however be attending meetups in New York, San Francisco and London.
The idea of having Foursquare day on April 16th came from the hook of 4/16 as a date which when translated is four-squared. While this can be considered a fun day to meet others who have an interest in Foursquare, in the U.S. there is a fierce competition to have the most attendance.
Jenn Matthews from Seattle, for example, has even partnered with Hootsuite, the social media management tool, together with Belltown Pub and is giving away gift packs and tickets for the Emerging Media Conference that discusses the future of emerging technologies which will be held in Seattle, WA, on June 19-20 and in San Francisco, CA (News - Alert), on January 28-3, 2013.
Want to celebrate Foursquare Day in your city and don’t have an event organized? Why not check into a local restaurant using Foursquare today? This day is all about supporting businesses and interacting with others in the community. Foursquare is also a great tool to discover businesses and destinations within your vicinity.
